As widely reported by Ethiopian media, Almaz Ayana and Usain Bolt are named International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) world athletes of the year at a ceremony in Monaco yesterday. They both have collected their awards.
It is a first time experience for Almaz Ayana to be in the spotlight as woman IAAF world athlete of the year. And the success didn’t come easy. She had to endure years of unsuccessful efforts before she started to dominate 3000, 5000 and 10000 meters categories. She even tried disciplines like steeplechase which was not her taste -apparently. She is now reigning in the 10,000 meters category,as a record holder.
A day before the IAAF Athletics Award nominated Athletes met with the media, according to IAAF report. And Almaz Ayana has expressed her ambitions and dreams. For the year 2017, she plans “to improve my performance in all events. And hopefully to run again for my country.”
She also have dreams of breaking world record in the 5000 meters category. She broke world record in 10,000 meters Olympic at Rio and now, she says, 10,000 meters has become her favorite distance.
In light of her experience in the 5000 meters category (she claimed Olympic bronze) and with the performance level she has now, it is imaginable that she has the hang of it and all it takes to break a new world record in the distance. From an interview she had with EthioTube after Rio Olympics, it looks like she regretted very much that she did not take gold in the 5000 meters.
IAAF 2017 Calendar seem to be full of Diamond League events in the Middle East, Europe and Asia (particularly China). Which means that Almaz has numerous possibilities to reign in the women’s 5000 meters category and make history, for herself and for Ethiopia, as she said.
